Valerian (D. Trifa) was Bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America which was received into the Russian Orthodox Metropolia in 1960. He led the Romanian Episcopate for many years, and represented the Church in the National Council of Churches. The Bishop was involved in much controversy and a long legal battle relating to the allegations of pro-Nazi activities in Romania. Metropolitan Leonty (Turkevich) was born and ordained in Russia and came to the United States in 1906. He was editor of the Russian-American Orthodox Messenger, dean of St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York City and became bishop of Chicago in 1933. he was elected Metropolitan in 1950.
